Imagine standing atop a heath bald, gazing into the haze at the gently rolling slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Float through the eerily calm black waters of a cypress swamp. Hear the rustling of cabbage palmettos swaying in the ocean breeze on a barrier island. Become immersed in nature…literally.
For the first time, you will see nature the way it’s meant to be seen…in full immersion! Using the latest High-Definition cameras, our crews are able to film 360° scenes for full dome projection. This means you’re not looking at a forest, you’re in one!
Our immersive documentary, or “domeumentary,” begins high in the Southern Appalachians, a place known to have some of the greatest biological diversity in the United States. We will take a look at the complex ecosystem of the Appalachian Cove Forest and explore some of the characteristics that make this place unique. Next, we will visit the Piedmont Plateau, where we will discover rare plants that found refuge here during the last ice age. Our adventure continues into dark cypress swamps, through long-leaf pine forests, and across salt marshes and beaches until, finally, we are standing at the edge of a barrier island watching the sun set over the mainland. Throughout the journey, we’ll examine the natural processes that shape these wonderful habitats, and we’ll take a close look at the plants and animals that call these places home.
The purpose of this film is to take viewers on an immersive tour through South Carolina’s most inspiring habitats and teach basic biological concepts and ecological principles through experiential learning.
About The Film and Educational Tour
Our goals are to cultivate admiration and respect for the natural world and to educate about the wonders of South Carolina’s ecosystem by bringing those ecosystems directly into schools across the state. Not only will we produce a 40-minute immersive nature documentary that focuses on five of the state’s most dynamic habitats, but we will deploy our full-dome theater system to 100 South Carolina schools for educational viewing. Our film is designed to support South Carolina’s science curriculum standards and is an ideal instructional tool for educators.
Inside of a single classroom period, we seat classes within a portable planetarium that gives the audience the sensation of actually being in the scene. Through state-of-the art filming techniques, HD technology, and a discrete surrounding audio system, 360° of South Carolina’s most majestic landscapes and wildlife will fully immerse, captivate, and ultimately educate students -not only of natural science, but of the fragile balance that exists between humankind and nature.
